We started off by watching the trailer for the movie, coming out next month, and all commented on how the movie will definitely differ from the book, but in a good way. The book doesn't necessarily have a happy ending, which works, but wouldn't make good formula for a movie. The characters in the movie look like they get along much better, laugh a little more often, and maybe even kindle a romance somewhere. In any case, we all thought the trailer looked promising, and we are excited to see the movie!
Other discussion points:
- The intervention that Jess pulled together was an un-liked scene. It seemed awkward and unrealistic.
- Discussion about Maureen's special-needs son lead someone to announce they had read somewhere the Nick Hornby, the author, also has a special-needs child. We were unclear, though, on what condition Maureen's son actually had.
- Some people pictured Maureen to be older than Toni Collette's character is in the movie trailer.
- The symbolism of the ferris wheel at the end was shaky...a good attempt at an ending but maybe trying too hard.
- Overall, I don't think anyone overwhelmingly loved this book but nobody hated it either.
